Rustic Fun

Project Type: School/Kindergarten

The Site: An existing kindergarten landscape in need of a revamp

The Brief: Alterations were needed to the existing pergola that semi shaded the large sandpit. Located alongside this was an area that would be perfect for waterplay. Extra seating, new hardsurfacing and more stimulating garden planting were also on the wish list

The Solution: The kindergarten already had a plan for the pergola and paving pattern so our task was to design the water feature. Obviously safety was the top requirement but there was also a need for a small body of water, enough to fit a small container in for the children to use as a scoop. We felt that water movement was also important and the look of the water feature had to match the rustic materials that were being used elsewhere. We ended up with a creation made from Hypertufa (sealed) and stacked schist biscuit stones. These biscuits were also used as solid paving in front of the water feature and small flaxes were planted in the surrounding rock garden.
