Country Courtyard

Project Type: Residential

The Site: A flat area of land containing a washingline and vegetable garden. The area is bordered by the garage and was previously only viewed from the laundry

The Brief: House renovations meant that this area was now overlooked from the kitchen and breakfast room so the clients wanted to re-locate the washingline and utilities to make room for an outdoor entertainment area. This entertainment area had to be practical to use in the evenings and also help to disguise the garage wall

The Solution: We designed the courtyard to fit with the style of the surrounding countryside and to be a welcoming place to relax with friends. The clients already had some pavers, so these were used in combination with small grade pebble to replace the lawn. A large pergola creates shade when using during the day and the chimnea warmth for the evenings. Planting was chosen for texture and movement and to soften the straight edges of the hard landscaping. The oriental screening provides a buffer for the westerly winds while creating a hidden location for the washingline and vege garden.
