Plant Information

Prunus lusitanica

Plant Type: Feature Plant
Plant Size: 5m in 10yrs
General Information

Again, another one of our most favourite plants.  The Portuguese Laurel is at the top of our list due to its flexibility in use and placement in confined spaces.

Features:  A hardy, small, evergreen specimen tree featuring dark, glossy foliage with red, new stem growth.  In late spring/summer white flowers appear in long racemes.

Uses:  Hedging, espalier along wires to soften a timber fence, standardised as they respond well to pruning, in large containers or raised planters, to provide structure in a small courtyard........need we go on?

Combinations:  Standards Portuguese Laurels planted in a row would look fantastic with Trachelospermum sprawling around the base of the trunks, likewise with Ophiopogon planiscapus or Hemerocallis 'Maleny Brigade'

Care: This is a hardy plant that can tolerate drought.  Little care is needed although we have seen a few with thrip infestations.
