Plant Information

Dicksonia fibrosa

Plant Type: NZ Native
Plant Size: 6m (over many, many years)
General Information

We adore this tree fern for it's interesting trunk, slow growth and hardiness. Whenever and wherever tree ferns are called for it's always our first choice.

Features: Very slow growing fibrous dark matted trunk, 1m - 2m long fronds grow in a symmetrical shuttlecock shape and are crisp to the touch

Uses: Grouped together to form a canopy of ferns. Select lighting on the trunk and fronds creates fantastic drama at night time. Dicksonia work well in both bush and modern gardens. Small specimens can be used as a ground cover as they are so slow growing

Combinations: Mass planted around the base with low growing ground covers e.g. other ground ferns, Hosta 'Golden Tiara' or Phormium 'Dark Delight'

Care: Spend fronds can create a 'skirt' around the trunk, this does help to protect the crown but they can be removed if desired. No other maintenance required for this very hardy plant.
