Plant Information

Carpinus betulus

Plant Type: Large Tree
Plant Size: 15m x 10m in 10yrs
General Information

The Hornbeam is a classic tree that can be used to create some striking sculptural effects.  The tree form, leaf texture and growth habit all provide interest.

Features: If left to naturally grow this tree has a pyramidal form with pale grey bark.  The ribbed leaves are a lush green turning yellow in autumn.  The dead brown leaves remain on the tree for a long time.

Uses:  As a specimen tree but if you are feeling adventurous, this plant makes a great hedge as it responds well to pleaching and pruning.  This useful plant can also be grown in a coppice for firewood, used as bonsai and looks equally as good in an english or mediterranean style garden.

Combinations: Alone to appreciate the full form, layered with other hedging plants e.g. Euonymus 'Emerald Gem', Ligustrum 'Rotundifolium'

Care:  Mulch and stake newly planted trees, the hornbeam can tolerate wind and semi shade but prefers rich or clay soils
